INTO SCENES

Discovering Unique Scenes to Photograph

Perhaps this gallery is most representative of my work. None of these photos was pre-planned. Each has a story to tell...either mine or your own. Each can hold attention for a prolonged time as your eyes "walk around" the image. Join my wanders around the American Southwest!

Sentinel Jay

How do you thank a Woodson's Jay for posing in the perfect spot for your capture? He sat there for just a few seconds and I forgot to panic, but I did get the shot and I did not throw him my energy bar.

Fireslide

Sometimes you just get plain lucky with the light. This was my very first time at White Pocket. Little did I realize how fortunate this sunset was in helping me create my all time favorite image from this location. It hangs behind my desk at home!

Broken

I was photographing a popular scene with a buddy when he suggested we look around the corner. It was so interesting that his composition from a slightly different direction told a completely different story. This has always been one of my favorite images.

Dog Day Afternoon

The lines in the foreground and in the sky beg for you to explore the middle ground. Enjoy!

Tres Amigos

I had bypassed a popular photo location at Bisti Wilderness in New Mexico and happened on this scene. A favorite of mine because I love images that tell a story. You can make up your own!

Feather Light

Large boulders form geometric patterns in a wall at Joshua Tree National Park. On close examination, a lone feather is found among the rocks.

Inspiration Valley

This spire is larger than it looks. Check out the rope hanging from the top that was used by a climber to reach an awesome perch. At the time I took this image it was a rarely visited spot. Now photo workshops often have this hike in spot on their itinerary...but rarely get such delightful colors reflected from the sky.

Kofa Burst

Pop-up thunderheads are commonplace during summers in the Sonoran Desert. This one was forming in the late afternoon and my hopeful anticipation was that it would position itself properly for my somewhat later than expected arrival at the Kofa Pinnacles, south of Quartzite. The image was taken shortly after sunset as the high clouds still received light from the West.

White Dream

Most photographers concentrate on the smaller scenes in this area of unique geology. Sometimes stepping back can give us a greater appreciation of our surroundings. The Grand Staircase is in the distant background.

Palm Canyon Cholla

Wandering into a cholla garden can be risky to your backside, especially if your focus is solely on the beautiful desert views. This was one of those time I escaped without any stickers.

Preservation

Dead for decades, a lone tree trunk stands alone with its killer surrounding its base. This image demonstrates the constantly changing landscape in geothermally active areas.

Fire in the Hole

Geothermal hot springs flow into a creek.

Fall Forager

Summers are short in Alaska. By necessity, the grizzlies get active as they sense the winter coming. This fall color was in early September.

White Mustang

Wild horses are found in numerous locations in the Southwest. This one was better at posing for a portrait than most.
