Ocean Photographs

What do you hear when you walk along the shores? Waves gently lapping against pier pylons? The symphony of surf breaking into the distance like an echo without a canyon? Or the thunderous crash as an iceberg crashes into the bay? The ocean's edge can be hypnotic, encouraging us to forget our troubles and look into our dreams.

Shoreline

A long wave breaks along the shore and washes around a foreground rock.

Before the Sea

A large volcanic bolder remains embedded in the shoreline as peaceful surf washes along the the flat beach.

Shadowy Figure

There were about six photographers lined up on the beach to capture the sea stacks and Bandon Beach. Most were unhappy that an early arrival had was in their composition. I incorporated the shadowy figure into my image to tell a more complete story.

Keyhole Rock

For a brief week in the winter, the setting sun penetrates the tunnel through this offshore rock, causing the breaking surf to glow through the passageway.

Throat of the Sea

Scheduling a venture out onto the rocks to capture this scene must be timed carefully to reduce the risk of serious injury or death from the surf. It doesn't help that the Fata Morgana appears like a tidal wave on the horizon.

Drifting

What could be better than a walk along the beach with your dog? The driftwood logs in the foreground have washed up on the beach from winter storms.

Bixby Bridge

The picturesque Bixby Bridge is a major icon along the Big Sur Coast. It was completed in 1932 at a cost of $200,000!

La Jolla Sunset

Channels through eroded shoreline rock reflect the evening sky.

Low Tide

A rocky prominence juts into the sea, providing a breakwater for crashing waves. At low tide, the protected shore reflects the light from the sky.

Breaker

A large wave breaks near the shore.
