BUYING FRAMES FOR YOUR ART

You have just purchased a beautiful painting and now it is time to put it in a frame. If you just purchased a painting with a price in the thousands of dollars, you are not likely to have sticker shock. But, let’s say you bought a photograph for around $500 or less. It’s time to show it off in your home. You may be surprised to find that a quality frame, with non-reflective, possibly with a quality mat and museum quality glass could triple or quadruple the cost of your investment. Why is this?

BUILDING FRAMES

You may be looking at showing your prints in a public places gallery, at a local art gallery or an art festival. Or you may already be selling a number of prints and you need to fulfill numerous orders quickly. Building your own picture frames can be very rewarding from both a creative and a financial standpoint. Or, it can be a source of great frustration and unnecessary expense. This article is designed to help you understand what is involved technically, with equipment and with materials acquisition. This article is written by a small time framer who has used these basic tools and has not had access to top-of-the-line framing tools. READ MORE...

PRINT OF THE MONTH

SPIRIT RISING

My preference is to offer images with more originality than this one, but I thought you might all enjoy a little history of the location and why my take on it might be different from these predecessors. My friend, Michael "Light Hunter" Fatali photographed this spot in Antelope Canyon on film well before ladders were in introduced to help the rest of us gain access. He printed "Angel Heart" on Cibachrome, truly a beautiful rendition. You can view this image here. Peter Lik, who reportedly (purportedly?) sold a slot canyon photograph for $6.5 million, has a photograph that he gives the slightly original title "Angel's Heart" He says, "I knew I had to capture this shot in the right light and waited days for the right moment." I just went at a good time! Peter Lik's version can be seen here. I admire the work of Ryan Smith. His more recent interpretation of the location is titled "Sacred Colors." It is closest to what I present as the Photo of the Month and can be seen here.

Spirit Rising

The image below is my photo from the angle close to where the first two photographers mentioned above were positioned. This is the spot that eliminates the sky from the image. If you haven't already done so, click on the "here" links above to look at the other photographers' work. I would love to hear from you as to what your preference is, especially in regards to saturation.
