HOW TO PHOTOGRAPH ANTELOPE CANYON
The most photogenic place on earth?
Well, at least it's right up there near the top. If you haven't been there, you should go. Peter Lik helped make it famous with his million dollar image sale. You don't have to pay a million bucks to have a beautiful memory...and your own artwork on your wall!
It's a must go place for sure!
This image is from Lower Antelope Canyon, but light beams occur more in Upper Antelope Canyon.
YOU WOULDN'T BE HERE IF YOU DIDN'T WANT TO GO THERE!
Since people have heard that I have gone to Antelope Canyon so many times, comments like "Oh, I want to go there!" or "We are going there next month" are often directed to me. Of course, I encourage everyone to visit this remarkable place. But when they do, they should also record at least part of what they see. Unfortunately, many of these friends would have much better prints if they just bought mine. But I want them to love their own prints and put those on their wall at home.
Antelope Canyon is in Northern Arizona, just outside the town of Page. You will need a Navajo guide to see the canyon.I will tell you how to get the right Navajo guides.
A Wall of Fire
Light streams down from the crack at the top of the slot canyon. As it does so it bounces off the walls of sandstone, creating ever richer tones of color the farther it gets down the shapely walls. Your eye might not even be able to see all the colors that are there...but your camera will. All you have to do is to have the settings correct and use the right techniques.
If you are a casual photographer with a smartphone, you won't feel as much at a disadvantage as you would if you were around photographers with tripods and digital cameras. No tripods are allowed here. But if you do have a fancy camera, you will be able to take images with results as good as if you were using a tripod. All you have to do is use the right techniques.
This image is from Upper Antelope Canyon.
A tour costs about $125 to see Upper Antelope Canyon and about $85 to see Lower Antelope Canyon.
Not counting travel and hotels, you will spend about $125 for Upper Antelope Canyon and about $85 for Lower Antelope Canyon.
The saddest memory of Antelope Canyon was when 11 tourists perished before current safeguards were put place. Now, it is safe for anyone who can walk up and down a couple flights of stairs. My personal saddest memory was nothing like someone dying in a slot canyon, but when I went to Antelope Canyon with another photographer. He was on his own and messed up. No good, printable images. I wish I had written my guide before he went. But I was messing up some too, back then. That is one of the reasons for developing the techniques in my guide and sharing them with you.
By the way, the guide is only a fraction of the cost of the tours.
You may just see beauty, but you may also see shapes and faces
This heart formation is one of the locations you should look for in Lower Antelope Canyon. You might miss it if you didn't know it was there. It only takes a step left or right before you don't see it very well.
This is just one of over 30 images in the guide that will help you both enjoy the experience and recognize what to look for and photograph. Without the guide, you won't see half of the beauty that is there.
HERE ARE SOME SAMPLE TIPS FROM THE GUIDE
1. Wear long pants unless you don't mind sandy knees when you get down for the best angle for some photos.
2. Take a cheap shower cap...like the ones some hotels offer. (Why? It's in the guide).
3. Make reservations early. Popular times fill up months in advance.
4. Don't shoot with Auto White Balance... even on smartphones.
5. If you don't have post processing skills, hire someone who does before making that big print.
