Custom Photography Workshop & Guiding Locations

Here are some potential locations for guide services or small group workshops.

Guide services are designed to get you to locations for your exploration and/or independent photography. Let me know what you are looking for. If I haven't photographed an area multiple times, I won't offer a workshop.

Small group and one-on-one workshops are designed to get you to outstanding scenes and advance you faster than would happen in a larger group workshop. Because of the small group size, you can expect more on-on-one attention than you would get in a larger workshop. Learn camera techniques, compositional skills and post processing that will take you to a higher level.

Your trip will be custom planned based upon timing, weather, meals, housing and transportation needs. Click on any of the links to see sample images or contact me if you want to see more than shown.

Many other locations are available, including those listed at the bottom of this page. Looking through my galleries you may see something that tickles your trigger finger. Just call me or use the contact form.

Pricing: You will be quoted a per person fee based upon the number of participants, your selected itinerary including housing and food options (all inclusive vs paid individually). You will be pleased with the cost since I have no middle men and very little advertising expense.

Grand Canyon Monsoon Photo Workshop

Very few weather phenomena can consistently be as dramatic (and safe) as watching monsoon storms pass over the Grand Canyon. You may even forget to take images just so you can watch! This trip requires a minimal fitness level, but visiting the North Rim at over 7000 feet calls for some acclimatization.  Trips to the North Rim, South Rim or both can be designed for your group. If you don't get enough at the North Rim, there are nearby locations that can be added. Accommodations can be either in hotels or campgrounds. Recommended time, late July through early September, but August dates have been the most predictable.

MORE DETAILS

White Pocket Photo Workshop

White Pocket(s) has become known as a photographer's paradise. To take in the full potential of White Pocket you must return again and again. There is not a bad time to go, but late August and September offer one of the best opportunities to photograph water in the pockets as well as dramatic skies. Although most of the locations to photograph are just a couple hundred yards from the parking area, you will work fairly hard walking through sand and climbing over slickrock at 6000 feet elevation, so a moderate degree of fitness and balance is helpful. A minimum of two days is recommended. White Pocket is a good add-on if you can land reservations at The Wave or South Coyote Buttes, but there are a number of other nearby locations including the North Rim at the Grand Canyon if you would like a combination trip.

Death Valley National Park Photo Workshop

An ideal time to visit Death Valley is when the rains (if any) have ended, the winds have begun (blowing sand photographs nicely) and there is still some water either in the Badwater area or in the form of snow on the mountains. Wildflowers are a bit unpredictable, but can be a nice bonus. This is late March through April. We can visit multiple sand dunes, beautiful salt beds, elevated views, nighttime skies and dramatic palettes of color. A degree of fitness is required to properly visit sand dunes, but if your group does not have this level of fitness we will find suitable alternatives. Choose from camping or hotel stays. Please schedule this trip in advance so appropriate reservations can be made.

California Redwoods and Southern Oregon Coast Photo Workshop

Combine the early morning mist of the redwoods with the beautiful sea stacks and sunsets along the Southern Oregon coast. Plan your trip for late May or early June for the best opportunity for ideal conditions. This trip requires a minimal fitness level. We will stay in convenient hotels.

Caddo Lake Photo Workshop

Previous participants have said this is both the most relaxing photography trip they have taken as well as the most excitiing! Step back (or paddle back) in time to discover and capture eerie and colorful scenes in this east Texas swamp. We combine paddling in kayaks and boat trips with expert guides to give you an unforgettable experience. Bring a long lens if you want some exceptional wildlife images. Our evening late breakfasts and evening dining will complete this flavor of the South. We stay at the lake to minimize driving and maximize time on the lake. In 2025 this will be offered in the first week of November only.

Joshua Tree National Park Photo Workshop

Joshua Tree NP is a wonderful location to hone your compositional skills. The huge boulders and Joshua tres will be the main subjects, but there are cacti and other subjects of interest. If you wish to focus just on black and white, that can be done. The best time to schedule is late April or early May and near a new moon if you with to do some night photography. Accommodations can be camping in the park (reservations necessary) or in Joshua Tree or 29 Palms hotels. Two to three days are recommended to reach as many locations as possible. Good balance and the ability to hike 1-2 miles a day is helpful for participants, but photo locations can be modified to reduce physical demands. This location can be combined with the Alabama Hills in the Eastern Sierra.

White Sands Photo Workshop

White Sands offers an opportunity to capture the color of the sky reflected in the captivating curves of white sand dunes. The preferred time for the location is in late spring when there is a greater chance for wind events that will move the lightweight gypsum sand to the sky and provide clean dunes without footprints. We stay in Alamogordo and arrange for early and late entry to the park to take advantage of the best morning and evening light (which is missed by most visitors). Plan on at least two days at White Sands NP to provide he greatest opportunity to experience various conditions. This trip may be combined with a camping experience to the New Mexico badlands (Bisti, etc).

Yellowstone & Grand Tetons Photo Workshop

Yellowstone National Park and Grand Tetons National Park are a wonderful late Spring (late April, early May) and early Fall (late September, early October) location. That is, go when the summer crowds aren't around and the weather is a bit crisp in the morning. I do not guide winter workshops. Workshops concentrate on capturing Yellowstone's many geothermal areas with an emphasis on colors and shapes, including abstract imagery. If you want to capture wildlife we will arrange a knowledgable local guide to get us on wolves, bear and moose. Yellowstone is huge and it is a bit of a drive from Yellowstone to Grand Tetons as well, so plan a minimum of five full days.

Prescott, Sedona and surrounds -I live here for six years, so know it well. I will see to it that you have productive sessions as we monitor the weather throughout the day. Round rocks, square rocks, red rocks and reflections. The summer monsoon season and fall color in late October and early November are best times to go..

Kofa Wilderness, Arizona - Good any time of year. Cactus, ocotillo blossoms possible late March through April. Overnight camping is best. Come prepared to pull cholla balls off your shoes. Consider adding Imperial Dunes, Anza Borrego or the Salton Sea.

Zion National Park - so many choices. Good any time of year, but especially good in Spring and Fall.

Bryce Canyon National Park - Any time of year; at 8000 feet, it can get quite cold in winter. Late summer is best.

Hanksville area - Capitol Reef, Factory Butte, badlands, and many hidden locations. Plan this trip in August or early September. It is recommended for overland camping.

Badlands of New Mexico (Bisti Wilderness, etc) - mid October,  Mid April to mid May. Recommended for camping.

Gold Butte National Monument &Little Finland - October 15-April 15. This is a two day trip with overnight camping that can be added on to Zion National Park.

There are also locations where we would hire a guide and I would provide photography instruction. Let me know.
