& BAYOUS

The swamps of the Southern U.S. are eerie, mystical, exciting and relaxing, pretty much all at once. While they may be full of mosquitoes, snakes and alligators during muggy summers, they are much cooler and beautiful as lilies come to life in late spring and as the bald cypress trees reveal warming colors in the fall. Add a morning mist or perfect reflection and the enchantment begins. If you want to photograph the swamps with me, please inquire about one of my workshops.

Most images are from the swamps of Texas and Louisiana. The Cypress Dreams series at the end is from Georgia. Can you tell the difference in how the bald cypress grow in these two different areas?

Faerie Mist

A quiet morning on the swamp.

Pitter Patter

Light rain falls on the swamp as the morning mist lifts.

Cup of Joe

Days always start off better with a cup of Joe and some rays of sunshine. The warming air breaks up the fog that remains from the cool night air mixing with the warmer water of this pond.

Sway

You could say this bough is taking a bow over the bayou. Many hardwood trees mix with the bald cypress trees along the edge of the swamps, especially along the narrower bayous.

Awakening

The Sanctum

There is a place in the swamp where you can find peace, comfort and enlightenment. This is the sanctum of the risen God.

Play Misty for Me

Fog rises above the surface of a pond along the Big Cypress Bayou in East Texas. Bald Cypress trees show their orange colors in early November.

Bayou Bough

You could say this bough is taking a bow over the bayou. Many hardwood trees mix with the bald cypress trees along the edge of the swamps, especially along the narrower bayous.

On Golden Pond

How could you not want to live close to this kind of warmth?

Color Symphony

How could you not want to live close to this kind of warmth?

Laurent's Dream

Photographers dream of perfect conditions, perfect compositions, perfect light. Here a photographer faces the sunlight coming through the mist.

Hanging Gardens

Spanish moss drapes from the branches of the bald cypress trees in an East Texas swamp.

Haunted

Thorny vines hung from the oaks overhead, plucking at my hoody as I made my way forward to the swamp. Approaching the cypress thickets, the muck where they thrive threatened to eat my footwear. I caught my balance more than once as knobby cypress knees sprung from below, catching me unaware. Autumn’s winds and rain had chased throngs of photographers and tourists from this mysterious place. The color was about to chased from my face faster than the cypress needle-like leaves change from bright green, to yellow, then to florid oranges and reds before dropping to the swamp surface. Assured that water moccasins, copperheads and gators were hiding from the chill of the season I trudged deeper through the woods in search of otherworldly images. Caddo Lake and its bayous are said to be haunted by early inhabitants and creatures of the deep. I don’t believe in such nonsense, or at least I didn’t until native faces and imagined creatures emerged from the eerie light.

Bald Cypress at Sunrise

Many bald cypress trees seem to grow in layers. The topmost layer seems to be king. It looks over the water, the other trees in the forest and lives with birds in flight. On this morning these contorted branches had the first view of sunrise as well.

Cypress Dreams 1

A favorite long range view of a cypress mill pond as the trees start their annual turn from green to yellow to deep oranges.

Cypress Dreams 2

An isolated cypress tree is reflected in a quiet pond as fall colors begin their annual swing through the South.

Cypress Dreams 3

The cypress pond offers many wonderful compositions that can hang together or alone.

Cypress Dreams 4

The cypress pond offers many wonderful compositions that can hang together or alone.

Back Water

This remote little area made us want to stay and hang our feet over the side of the boat and sing Stephen Foster songs.
