Veneers

What are veneers?

Veneers are very thin porcelain shells that look and feel just like your natural teeth. Typically used to change the appearance of your smile, veneers also provide protection against further tooth damage and add strength to your teeth. Dr. Strain may recommend veneers if you have:

  • A cracked tooth
  • Tooth discoloration
  • Misshapen teeth
  • A tooth gap
  • Crooked teeth
  • A fractured tooth

When cared for properly, veneers can last anywhere from 10 to 20 years, making them the perfect option for patients who want to change their smile without undergoing serious dental work.

How are veneers placed?

To ensure your veneers mold to your teeth perfectly, you will typically need to schedule two appointments with Dr. Strain. At the first appointment, he or a member of his team will clean your damaged or discolored tooth and determine the correct shade for your veneer. Next, he will remove a small portion of the enamel to make room for the veneer, so it doesn’t look bulky.

Dr. Strain will then take impressions of your tooth, which are sent off to the lab for fabrication. While you wait for your new veneer, Dr. Strain will fit you for a temporary veneer. It takes approximately two weeks for your custom veneers to be created and sent back to Dr. Strain’s office.

At your second appointment, the temporary veneer is removed. Dr. Strain will then clean your tooth and pumice it to prepare for your permanent veneer. Once your tooth is fully prepared, Dr. Strain uses an adhesive and a special solution to cement the veneer to your tooth, molding it to fit in with the shape and length of the rest of your teeth. Before you leave, Dr. Strain will light cure your veneer for about one minute and polish the new restoration.

How do I care for my veneers at home?

You care for veneers just like your natural teeth. In addition to brushing twice a day and flossing regularly, Dr. Strain recommends fluoride toothpaste for cleaning veneers. It is also wise to limit your intake of food and drinks that cause tooth stains, such as coffee, black tea, red wine, and dark berries. While porcelain veneers are stain resistant, you may notice discoloration over time.

With Dr. Strain’s expertise, dental veneers can help you achieve the smile of your dreams. For more information on veneers, call Rob Strain, DDS, or book an appointment online today.
