Teeth Whitening

Why are my teeth yellow?

Even if you have great oral health habits — brushing twice a day, regular flossing, routine dental cleanings, etc. — you may notice your teeth turning yellow or brownish over the years. There are a number of reasons your teeth begin to change in color as you age, including:

Food and drink

There are plenty of tooth staining foods and drinks that darken your teeth over time, such as:

  • Coffee
  • Black tea
  • Soda
  • Red wine
  • Soy sauce
  • Balsamic vinegar
  • Dark berries

These foods and beverages contain chromogens — color pigments that attach to and darken your enamel.

Certain medications

Some medications, including blood pressure drugs, chemotherapy, antihistamines, and antipsychotics have been shown to cause tooth discoloration in some patients.

Tobacco use

The tar and nicotine found inside chewing tobacco and cigarettes lead to tooth discoloration when activated by oxygen.

Age

As you age, the outer layer of your teeth wears down and exposes the darker dentin underneath.

What is in-office tooth whitening?

While there are plenty of over-the-counter tooth whitening options, such as whitening toothpaste, mouthwash, and whitening strips, no treatment is as effective as in-office whitening. Most professional whitening products contain either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, which breaks up dark and yellow stains to reveal the bright white smile underneath.

How does tooth whitening work?

Once Dr. Strain goes over your tooth whitening options, a solution consisting of hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide is placed directly onto your teeth. A light or laser is then used to activate the main ingredients in the solution to whiten your smile instantly. The entire process takes just 30 to 60 minutes.

Professional tooth whitening delivers dramatic and noticeable results in most cases, but it may take more than one visit for you to see the results you want. You can visit Dr. Strain in six months to a year to touch up your smile. During this time, it’s best to brush your teeth twice a day and limit your intake of stain-inducing foods and drinks.

Dr. Strain can help you achieve the bright white smile you’ve always wanted. For more information on your tooth whitening options, call Rob Strain, DDS, or book an appointment online today.
