Restorative Dentistry

What is restorative dentistry?

Restorative dentistry refers to any dental procedure or treatment used to keep your teeth healthy and strong. While most restorative procedures improve the appearance of your smile, these treatments are primarily meant to restore the function of your teeth.

Which treatments can restore my smile?

There are a number of restorative treatments available to improve and strengthen your smile, including:

Dental crown

Dental crowns are cap-shaped restorations that fit over your teeth to protect against decay, cover cavities that are too large for fillings, replace a missing tooth, or reshape a broken or chipped tooth. A simple way to restore the strength of your damaged tooth, dental crowns at Rob Strain, DDS, are available in a number of high-quality materials, including IPS e.max®, Feldspathic, and Zirconium.

A filling is used to repair a tooth that has been damaged by decay. Once Dr. Strain removes the decay, a filling is placed on the tooth to keep its natural shape and prevent bacteria and plaque from infiltrating it once again.

Composite bonding

If you suffer from tooth discoloration, a chipped tooth, or a misshapen tooth, composite resin can be placed on your tooth to improve its shape, color, or length. Once the resin has bonded to your tooth, Dr. Strain uses ultraviolet light or a laser to harden the bonding material. The resin is then trimmed, molded, and polished to look and feel exactly like your natural teeth.

Dental veneers

Dental veneers are wafer-thin porcelain or composite restorations that are custom made to fit over your teeth. They restore the shape, color, and length of teeth that have been damaged by tooth decay, discoloration, and more. Unlike composite bonding, custom veneers are completely stain-resistant.

What are my options if I have missing teeth?

Dr. Strain can help you determine the right tooth replacement option for your lifestyle and budget. Some of the most popular treatments include:

Dental bridge

Dr. Strain recommends dental bridges to patients with missing teeth. Much like a real bridge, a dental bridge literally bonds the gap left behind by a missing tooth. On each side of your missing tooth lies abutment teeth, which support your artificial tooth, or pontic. In addition to restoring your smile, a dental bridge prevents your teeth from shifting.

Dental implants

Dental implants are replacement tooth roots that add support to your prosthetic teeth — partial dentures, full dentures, dental crowns, etc. They are screwed directly into the socket left behind by your missing tooth and ultimately become a natural looking addition to your smile. When cared for properly, dental implants can last a lifetime.

Restorative dentistry improves your smile from the inside out. To learn more about the full range of restorative treatments available at Rob Strain, DDS, call or book an appointment online today.
